Harvard’s Intro to Computer Science on edX: No Prior Experience Required

Looking for a quality course where you can learn some computer science concepts, get exposed to a smattering of programming languages, but you have no programming experience?

Look no farther!  EdX’s CS50x: Introduction to Computer Science self-paced course was created by a Harvard team that offers all of the above all with a focus on real-world applications for FREE! Students can register for an audit option and participate as much as their schedules allow, but if they complete the assignments as needed they can receive an Honor Certificate.  If they choose to pay, they can receive a Harvard certificate or even Harvard Credit.  No prerequisites are required, so if your aspiring kid coder wants to participate, go for it!

edX Course Description: CS50x is Harvard College’s introduction to the intellectual enterprises of computer science and the art of programming for majors and non-majors alike, with or without prior programming experience. An entry-level course taught by David J. Malan, CS50x teaches students how to think algorithmically and solve problems efficiently. Topics include abstraction, algorithms, data structures, encapsulation, resource management, security, software engineering, and web development. Languages include C, PHP, and JavaScript plus SQL, CSS, and HTML. Problem sets inspired by real-world domains of biology, cryptography, finance, forensics, and gaming. As of Fall 2013, the on-campus version of CS50x was Harvard’s second-largest course.
